Budding Pale Ale

Very popular pale ale with a grassy bitterness, sweet malt and luscious floral aroma. This is a pale ale of 4.5% with Fuggles used as the main bittering hop - then late hopped for a luscious floral aroma. Our biggest selling beer! Edwin Beard Budding of Thrupp, Stroud, invented the lawnmower in 1830 - 'for the purpose of cropping or shearing the vegetable surface of lawns, grass plats, and pleasure grounds'. Budding was an engineer servicing the abundant wool mills of the Stroud valleys and he took his inspiration from a machine with a helical blade that cut the nap (fluff) off the newly woven cloth. Budding went into partnership with, John Ferrabee to produce the mowers at Phoenix Mill Foundries in Thrupp.

4.5% ABV. Champion Beer of Gloucestershire 2006 and 2008. Very popular pale ale with a grassy bitterness, sweet malt and luscious floral aroma.

Tom Long Amber Bitter

Tom Long, 3.8% is an amber coloured bitter with a spicy citrus aroma. This beer won Overall Champion for the West of England and Wales, 2008 in the Society of Independent Brewers Awards as well as other awards. Highwayman Tom Long is named after a mythical highwayman hung at Tom Longs Post on Minchinhampton Common, near Stroud. Another derivation of the name is found in the Canting Dictionary [thieving slang], 1736. This is a collection of words and terms, both ancient and modern, used by Beggars, Gypsies, Cheats, House-Breakers, Shop-Lifters, Foot-Pads and Highway-Men.

3.8% ABV. Silver at SIBA National Beer Competition, Champion Bitters (up to 4.0%) Amber session beer with spicy citrus aroma. Good body for low ABV.

Woolsack Porter

A rich easy drinking porter, a brew of great character. Wool was the most important export commodity during the Middle Ages and the sheep of the Cotswolds were the largest source of fine wool. Until the position was abolished by Tony Blair, the Lord Chancellor sat on a Woolsack, a seat stuffed with wool, in Parliament . It was introduced by King Edward III (1327-77) and originally stuffed with English wool as a reminder of England's traditional source of wealth - the wool trade - and as a sign of prosperity. In more recent times the Woolsack was stuffed with wool from several countries of the Commonwealth, to symbolise unity. Tetbury is home to the annual woolsack races. Tetbury thrived in the middle ages as a market for wool, standing as it does in the middle of sheep country on the important route from Oxford to Bristol. The wool trade went into decline in the early 19th Century, leaving brewing as the important local industry. Today on Woolsack day they maintain this link; drinking beer in The Crown or The Royal Oak - then running up a 1 in 4 hill carrying a 60 lb woolsack! It is thought that the races originated in the 17th Century by young drovers showing off to local women by running up the hill carrying a woolsack. An official race day has been going for over 30 years now with world records entered in the ‘Guinness book of Records’.

Teasel Best Bitter

A classic best bitter, full bodied, fruity and dry on the finish. Great together with a meal. Teasels were used in the Stroud woolen industry to raise the nap on cloth.

Our Old & New Brewhouse

We designed the brewing kit ourselves. After many years of contemplation, extensive research of other similar sized breweries and a Start Up Commercial Brewing course at Sunderland University we decided to design and build the brewery ourselves. We worked closely with a local fabricator, Alphamace, utilizing their wealth of experience in food process fabrication to construct a very practical 5 barrel brewery. Our first brew - of Budding - was on May 22nd 2006. In June 2011, we moved production to a 20 barrel plant in a larger unit just across the loading bay.

5 years after our first brew in our 5BBL* brewery, we will move production to our new 20BBL brewery just across the loading bay from our original home, which will soon become our packaging store. The new brewery has been fabricated to our specification, and is a larger replica of our original brewery. We wish to continue brewing in the same style using whole cone hops, rather than switching to pellets and hop oils as many expanding breweries tend to do.

As well as increased capacity, our new brewery allows us to manage the variables that face beer production much more accurately, ensuring our quality and consistency, and improving our energy efficiencies.

This expansion has partly been enabled through the support of the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE). We were eligible for support due to our commitment to use Cotswold grown malting barley, support for sustainable agriculture and reducing our energy use.
